To Install Android 4.0.3 ICS MIUI ROM On Galaxy S II, which, based on CyanogenMod, is one of the more popular custom builds due to its smooth and distinct interface. More than being just a pretty face though, it features a better notifications menu as well as enhanced Camera/Gallery/Music apps.

Last month we showed you how To Install Android 4.0.3 ICS MIUI ROM On Galaxy S IIon your HP TouchPad device, and courtesy of adyscorpius over at XDA-Developers, you can now install it on your Samsung Galaxy S II. It’s a pretty well-tuned build, thus you won’t have to sacrifice any basic functions in order to enjoy it, and while we’d usually advise against performing such mods on your daily runner, this particular ROM is at version 2.1, so many of the usual caveats found in early alpha releases have been resolved.


If you’ve already installed CyanogenMod on your Galaxy S II, you will need to boot into ClockworkMod Recovery, wipe /data and /cache partitions, before installing the downloaded .zip file from installzip from sdcard menu; just as we did in our previous tutorial: how to install CyanogenMod 7 (Alpha 3).

Even if you haven’t already installed CyanogenMod, don’t fret, since installing MIUI on the Galaxy S II isn’t particularly difficult. Check out the guide how to install CyanogenMod (Alpha 11) for information on how you can do that.

With the formalities out of the way, let’s get started. Before you begin, make sure you’ve the following files at the ready:

Step 1: Download the AdyScorpiusMIUIv2.1-ICS-i9100-2.1.20.zip via this link. The file is over 100MB, so may take a few moments for those on slower connections.

Step 2: Once the download is complete, copy the .zip file to /sdcard.

Step 3: Boot your Galaxy SII into Recovery Mode.

Step 4: Select Wipe Data/Factory Reset, and then go to Mounts and Storage and select Wipe System.

Step 5: Install zip from sdcard – Version 2.1.

Step 6: Wipe Data/Factory Reset once more.

Step 7: Reboot your device, and you should be good to go.

The opening weekend gross of “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” through its solid invasion of raves swung past “Captain America’s” 2nd 5-day weekend take of P 30.5 million.

Subhuman Caesar raises a level higher than the superhuman when “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” unlocked at P 31.7 million at the Philippines box-office on its four-day weekend (Aug. 4-7).

Web search engines like Google may be slowly changing the way brains remember information, a recent study by Columbia University psychologist Betsy Sparrow has shown.

In a research paper published July 14 in Science, Sparrow said that people's brains now tend to rely more on the Internet for memory instead of storing firsthand information.

“Since the advent of search engines, we are reorganizing the way we remember things. Our brains rely on the Internet for memory in much the same way they rely on the memory of a friend, family member or co-worker. We remember less through knowing information itself than by knowing where the information can be found," she said.

According to her research, people tend to forget things that they are confident can be found on the Internet.

But people will also be more likely to remember things that they think are not available online.

Google testing 'infinite scrolling' for search results 


Search giant Google may be working on a new interface for its search results, including a “sticky" search box and infinite scrolling.

Enthusiast site “The Google Operating System" said the new design appears to be more fluid and removes pagination.

“The most important change is that most navigation elements continue to be visible even when you scroll down. The navigation bar, the search box and the search options sidebar have a fixed position, which means that you no longer have scroll to the top of the page to edit the query or switch to a specialized search engine," it said.

It noted the sticky search box and sidebar, and the infinite scrolling, are already available in Google Image Search. -gmanews

Facebook member claims account disabled over Google+ ad

Was an ad asking for a Google+ invite enough basis for Facebook to disable a member's account, including his online campaigns?

It was for web app developer Michael Lee Johnson, who said Facebook disabled his ad account but did not specify the reasons for it.

Johnson, who eventually got his Google+ account, posted his ordeal online - and made known his sentiment about Facebook on his Google+ account.

"(P.S.) Facebook - You Suck," he said. -gmanews

As of Sunday noon (in Manila), 1,460 Google+ users have Johnson in their circles.

Before his account was disabled, Johnson had posted an ad on Facebook, asking Google+ users to add him to their circles.

Pentagon admits 24,000 files stolen in cyberattack
The United States' Pentagon has admitted losing some 24,000 files to a cyberattack, possibly by a foreign government, last March.

US deputy defense secretary William Lynn said the data was taken from the computers of a corporate defence contractor, UK-based The Telegraph reported Friday.

Lynn said the US government had a "pretty good idea" of who the perpetrator is, the Telegraph report said. -gmanews

Future iPhones may sport 'citizen journalist' features

Soon, an iPhones may be all anyone needs to engage in citizen journalism, if a patent application filed by Apple Inc. materializes.

Enthusiast site Patently Apple cited a patent application referring to two features as "report" and "interview" modes.

"The new features creatively utilize multiplex video streaming techniques whereby dual cameras on the iPhone could automatically switch back and forth between interviewer and interviewee seamlessly for a live report. While Apple may be working on future iPhone features catering to iReporters, I think that their initial features will definitely capture the imaginations of iReporters everywhere," the site said.

Google+ allows members to 'hide' gender
Showing its gender-sensitive side, Google will allow members of its upcoming social network Google+ to hide their gender.

Google+ profiles product manager Frances Haugen called the feature a "privacy enhancement," which she said stemmed from "user feedback."

"Starting later this week, you will be able to set the privacy setting of your gender on your Google+ Profile just as you control other information about yourself. :-)" she said in a post.

An article on tech site CNET said the option to conceal gender may be convenient for companies and entities.

However, the CNET article quoted Google product manager Christian Oestlian as initially saying Google is presently not supporting "brands, organizations, and nonhuman entities," at least during its private beta testing.

It also quoted Google product management vice president overseeing Google+ Bradley Horowitz as saying they are "actively discouraging businesses to adopt consumer profiles," at least for now. — RSJ, GMA News
