Next iPhone to get enhanced voice control?

Next iPhone to get enhanced voice control?

New patent applications with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office show Apple Inc. may be working on an enhanced voice command system for its future iPhones.

Enthusiast site AppleInsider said Apple's rumored voice control system may be a feature coming to iOS 5 later this year.

"Both applications were applied for by Apple in January of 2010. The proposed invention related to audio feedback is credited to Benjamin Andrew Rottler, Aram Lindahl, Allen Paul Haughay Jr., Shawn A. Ellis and Policarpo Wood. Wood and Lindahl are also credited for the voice input application," AppleInsider said in a blog post. -gmanews

Search engines changing how memory works — study

Search engines changing how memory works — study
Web search engines like Google may be slowly changing the way brains remember information, a recent study by Columbia University psychologist Betsy Sparrow has shown.

In a research paper published July 14 in Science, Sparrow said that people's brains now tend to rely more on the Internet for memory instead of storing firsthand information.

“Since the advent of search engines, we are reorganizing the way we remember things. Our brains rely on the Internet for memory in much the same way they rely on the memory of a friend, family member or co-worker. We remember less through knowing information itself than by knowing where the information can be found," she said.

According to her research, people tend to forget things that they are confident can be found on the Internet.

But people will also be more likely to remember things that they think are not available online.

Google testing 'infinite scrolling' for search results

Google testing 'infinite scrolling' for search results

Search giant Google may be working on a new interface for its search results, including a “sticky" search box and infinite scrolling.

Enthusiast site “The Google Operating System" said the new design appears to be more fluid and removes pagination.

“The most important change is that most navigation elements continue to be visible even when you scroll down. The navigation bar, the search box and the search options sidebar have a fixed position, which means that you no longer have scroll to the top of the page to edit the query or switch to a specialized search engine," it said.

It noted the sticky search box and sidebar, and the infinite scrolling, are already available in Google Image Search. -gmanews

Facebook member claims account disabled over Google+ ad

Facebook member claims account disabled over Google+ ad

Was an ad asking for a Google+ invite enough basis for Facebook to disable a member's account, including his online campaigns?

It was for web app developer Michael Lee Johnson, who said Facebook disabled his ad account but did not specify the reasons for it.

Johnson, who eventually got his Google+ account, posted his ordeal online - and made known his sentiment about Facebook on his Google+ account.

"(P.S.) Facebook - You Suck," he said. -gmanews

As of Sunday noon (in Manila), 1,460 Google+ users have Johnson in their circles.

Before his account was disabled, Johnson had posted an ad on Facebook, asking Google+ users to add him to their circles.

Pentagon admits 24,000 files stolen in cyberattack

The United States' Pentagon has admitted losing some 24,000 files to a cyberattack, possibly by a foreign government, last March.

US deputy defense secretary William Lynn said the data was taken from the computers of a corporate defence contractor, UK-based The Telegraph reported Friday.

Lynn said the US government had a "pretty good idea" of who the perpetrator is, the Telegraph report said. -gmanews

Hackers jailbreak Apple's latest update

Hackers jailbreak Apple's latest update

"(We) have a new redsn0w 0.9.8b3 that supports a TETHERED jailbreak for iOS 4.3.4 on all devices that have 4.3.4 except the iPad2," redsn0w said in a blog post.

There are no new features in 4.3.4 but only fixes for jailbreak exploits, redsn0w added.

Also, redsn0w released a tethered jailbreak for the upcoming iOS 5. The jailbreak also does not cover the iPad 2 yet, but covers:

iPod touch 3G

iPod touch 4G

iPad 1

iPhone3GS
* iPhone4 (GSM)
* iPhone4 (CDMA)

"THIS IS A TETHERED JAILBREAK ONLY! No new exploits are being exposed with this jailbreak (it uses geohot’s limera1n bootrom exploit), but that comes at a cost," redsn0w cautioned.

Lady Gaga website hacked; fans' data stolen

Lady Gaga website hacked; fans' data stolen

Popular singer-songwriter Lady Gaga fell victim to a hackers' group that broke into her United Kingdom website and stole her fans' data from the site.

Swag Security, the group that also attacked the site of singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse, posted an expletive-laced statement against the artist after the hack.

But the main and UK websites of Lady Gaga, Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta in real life, appeared normal as of 5 a.m. Sunday (in Manila).

In its profanity-filled "press release," the hacker group scored the artist for supposedlybashing gays.

UK-based news site Mirror reported Lady Gaga called in police after thousands of her fans’ personal details were stolen from her website.

It quoted a source as saying the artist was "upset and hopes police get to the bottom of how this was allowed to happen."

10M users sharing 1B posts a day on Google+, CEO says
JM TUAZON, GMA News

Google's chief executive has confirmed it himself: barely a month after its limited release, Google+ has already breached the 10-million user mark, confirming earlier estimates by avid social networking spectators.

In a post shared on his Google+ profile outlining the remarks he made in a recent earnings call, Google CEO Larry Page said that while the new service is still on field trial and sign-ups are by invitation only, growth on the new social networking platform "has been great" thus far.

Google Android users warned vs fake antivirus spyware

Google Android users warned vs fake antivirus spyware

“The application package uses an icon similar to the Kaspersky Lab icon, but the actual functionality is far less useful than the functionality of the legitimate product," virus researcher Vanja Svajcer said in a blog post.
The IP address 127.0.0.1 refers only to the host, or the local device. As such, the broadcast receiver will not be able to send data to the network to which the Android device is connected.

However, Svajcer warned this may be an early build, and a more dangerous version may be on the way.

“Clearly, this is just an early test build and we will have to be on watch for the next version which will be connected with a real malicious server," Svajcer said. — Source:  TJD, GMA
