Tips on how to maximize mobile workforce productivity

By Alexander Villafania

MAKATI CITY, METRO MANILA - In the age of information and communications technology, traditional methods of working in one place has started to change.

Office workers are no longer stuck to their seats in their office and are actually more mobile than before. There are questions if having a mobile workforce is effective in having a productive company but in most cases, the benefits outweigh the costs.

Corporate space provider Regus and research firm Unwired released a report (http://www.unwired.eu.com/publications/vwork.php) that covered various organizations worldwide citing the advantages of having a mobile workforce. Previous reports showed that mobile workforce are more productive than traditional offices and are happier with their work.

In fact, the Regus and Unwired report follows a statement from the International Data Corporation (IDC), which stated that by 2013 there will be 1.2 billion mobile workers globally. Asia Pacific countries are forecast to have the biggest with an estimated 734.5 million by 2013, up from 546 million in 2008.

With a lot of potential in terms of corporate productivity, there are still risks involved when getting people to become mobile. There are also techniques to ensure that building a mobile workforce would work for a company.

The following are just a few simple tips from Regus to make a mobile workforce more effective:

Provide the best technologies to help staff work efficiently. These include mobile phones, laptops, and an available Internet connection either through USB broadband antennas or WiFi.

Keep staff from feeling isolated by having alternative locations for work such as business centers. Managers must also keep in touch with their workers at least once a week.

Ensuring safety and health at home by providing adequate ergonomic chairs and tables. Even at home, workers might still feel uncomfortable with their limited space.

Keep connected with workers by having regular face-to-face meetings.

Set policies to be followed by mobile workers to ensure that they remain productive.

For out-of-office meetings choose a place where staff and managers can meet without being disturbed. These could be in rented office spaces.

Use new technologies that provide virtual meeting environments, such as video conferencing. This reduces costs for travel among office workers.

There are other methods of ensuring productivity among mobile workers. Having a sound plan and direction are necessary to have an effective and productive environment for employees who are mobile. In the long run, this could be effective for the company.
